Our Week in the Word segment this week comes from Philip Brown, our College and Singles Pastor.

A Good Tired

This is a phrase that I have used for quite a while to describe times in my life that have been hard but not because of any particular sin, loss of a loved one, or loss of sleep but usually because my week has been full of stuff at church and family. I’m not talking about overlooking yourself either, sometimes life just hits. It’s almost like a good workout. You are tired, but you know that it is good for you.

When I ask how someone is doing on a Sunday morning I usually get an honest answer with… they are tired. I think we have come to expect that at our church and expect that suffering is just going to happen but I think we miss the joy in being a good tired.

Sometimes our tiredness doesn’t need to be fixed but endured.

James reminds us to… “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2–4, ESV). Paul also reminds us not to grow weary in doing good.  In Gal 6:9 we read “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up.”

My challenge this week is for us to encourage each other when Sunday comes with a good tired and be encouraged by the saints to go and do it again. When we do this… being with our brothers and sisters on Sundays becomes oh so much more of a blessing than a chore!!
