On Mondays, we’ll take time to meet the women of NAOBC. Five questions followed by how you can connect with the NAOBC women on social media. Today’s interview is with Judy Howe.
Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I have five children and seven grandchildren. My husband of 43 years passed away three years ago, and I moved to Louisville from Paducah, Kentucky, to be closer to my children and grandchildren. My husband‘s last five years required “around-the-clock” care as he had Lewy Body Dementia, and I chose to keep him at home with help from some caregivers. I worked at the uranium enrichment plant in Paducah for 34 years, holding various positions, most recently ensuring that systems measuring uranium were in control. My passion for serving the Lord has been through Women’s Bible Study and Ukraine missions. In Paducah, I facilitated small group discussions for 30-40 Bible studies. I have worked for the past 16 years in helping start a church in a small village in Ukraine. I have made four trips to Ukraine and remain actively involved in this ministry.
Q: How long have you been at NAOBC? BFG? Areas where you serve?
A: I have been at NAOBC for about two years and attend Senior Adults BFG, which breaks off into a women’s group after announcements. I attend Selwyn Parker‘s D group. Not surprisingly, I am on the rope-holding team for Ukraine, although the Hugheses have relocated now, with the war going on. I served in VBS in 2023 and also visited shut-ins.
Q: What is a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about you?
A: A train once hit me, and I’ve also run over a cow in the road—clarification before you refuse to ride with me. I was not driving – only a passenger!
Q: What woman has made the most impact in your life?
A: I want to name two women. My friend Suzanne Thomas lost her husband at 56 years old to a widow-maker heart attack. Instead of flowers, she asked people to contribute to starting a village church in Ukraine. She asked me to go with her, and it has been one of the best experiences of my life. We have visited Ukraine eight times, often leading groups. I have been able to go on four of these trips. The other woman who has had a significant impact on my life is Grace Kim. I have never seen a woman so passionate about evangelism as Grace is. She has a heart for women of all nationalities and all religions. She has a burden for any woman who is lost. She follows up on her initial contact by arranging additional meetings or study sessions. All of this is bathed in prayer. She also organizes social events to promote evangelism by bringing together ladies who share a heart for evangelism.
Q: What is something the Lord has taught you in the last year?
A: The Lord has taught me to pray and wait on him when I’m pursuing a new direction because he does exceedingly abundantly more than I ever ask or imagine. I tend to want to see the whole plan based on my knowledge to relieve my anxiety associated with the unknown. I am learning to wait and depend on Him. Nothing is more precious than to see God‘s fingerprints on my life, knowing that he has intervened in my plans with something better than I ever imagined.

When you are a member at NAOBC, no matter where God takes you, the love for NAOBC remains. It’s part of your DNA. Periodically we’ll spotlight women who were former members – see where they are today and what NAOBC means to them. Today we’re meeting Jill Wall.
Q: Tell a little about yourself – family, occupation (if applicable), etc.
A: My husband, Travis, and I met at Ninth & O, and we have three children, Mollie, Eli, and Noah. I have worked as a paralegal for 19 years, and this past summer, I transitioned to part-time so that I can do more ministry work among refugees and immigrants with Travis through Team Expansion, while also homeschooling our kids.
Q: When did you attend NAOBC? What brought you to NAOBC?
A: I attended Ninth & O from 2008 to 2020. I visited Ninth & O seeking a solid biblical church with more people my age. I found a church home where I grew in my faith and made lifetime friendships.
Q: Where did you serve while at NAOBC?
A. While at Ninth & O, I served in the nursery and with the women’s ministry.
Q: What memory from your time at NAOBC means the most to you still today?
A: It’s hard to narrow it down to one! I was baptized at Ninth & O. It’s where I met my husband, and our daughter came to faith and was baptized there as well. There are also countless other fun and heartwarming memories from being part of Ninth & O for close to 12 years.
Q: What is one thing you loved about NAOBC?
A: I loved Ninth & O because I was part of a church family where I experienced significant growth in my faith through sound biblical teaching from Dr. Cook, a mission trip to North Africa, and through the support of sweet friends of all ages, as well as the women’s ministry. I am thankful for my time at Ninth & O!

On Mondays, we’ll take time to meet the women of NAOBC. Five questions followed by how you can connect with the NAOBC women on social media. Today’s interview is with Foua Xiong.
Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I was born in Manitowoc, WI, to Hmong refugee parents. They came to the US after the Vietnam War and settled in Wisconsin. I am the oldest of eleven children. I lived in Thailand and Taiwan for almost a decade, spending six of those years doing mission work in Taiwan. I moved from Taipei to Louisville to attend seminary, further equipping me to engage in missions, and graduated in May 2023. A few months before graduation, the Kentucky Woman’s Missionary Union hired me as a part-time ministry assistant, then moved me to full-time after I graduated.
Q: How long have you been at NAOBC? BFG? Areas where you serve?
A: I started attending NAOBC in December 2022 and became a member in March 2023. During that time, I attended the Women’s BFG, and right away, I loved the women there. It’s such a fun and caring community. I serve in Sunday Preschool, teach ESL in our COFFEE ministry on Tuesdays, and am a Guest Leader in the Women’s BFG.
Q: What is a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about you?
A: While living overseas, I paraglided off a cliff in India, near the Nepal border. I was terrified, but couldn’t pass up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Q: What woman has made the most impact in your life?
A: I met an IMB missionary in Taiwan, and she has been mentoring me for many years.
Q: What is something the Lord has taught you in the last year?
A: He has taught me patience in waiting. I am not sure what He has planned for me, but I am to be faithful where He has me now. Mark Vroegop says it well, “Don’t make the mistake of thinking that waiting means you are doing nothing. Usually, it just means that you’re not doing what you want to do. Turn waiting into a spiritual opportunity.” Waiting for the Lord’s timing and His plans has paid off. On August 31, 2025, I will be traveling to Poland to work with a local church there. I am sad to leave friends and family, but I am excited to see what the Lord has planned for me there. I’m off to the next big adventure.

On Mondays, we’ll take time to meet the women of NAOBC. Five questions followed by how you can connect with the NAOBC women on social media. Today’s interview is with Esther Marcum.
Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I am single right now. I am in a relationship with Timothy, whom I will marry this summer, and I am excited about this. I come from a big family. I have eleven brothers and sisters I am one of the oldest. I have two nephews and one niece, whom I adore very much. Two of my siblings will be getting married this year, and so will I in August. Because we’re part of a big family, something fun always happens, like weddings and babies being born. I love being an aunt, and I became one with my first nephew, Mack, and then Noah and Aliyah.
Q: How long have you been at NAOBC? BFG? Areas where you serve?
A: I have been at Ninth and O for a year, which feels like I have been here forever. I love my church. I am in the singles BFG with Pastor Phillip. I am so grateful for my friendships in the singles group. I serve in the nursery with the little ones and in the purple room, one of my favorite ages to work with.
Q: What is a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about you?
A: I love to serve people and cook, and I also love having people over and making Ethiopian food and Ethiopian coffees. I also love coffee and love to explore different coffee shops in Louisville. I also love to travel to do missions and share the gospel with people I meet. I also love trying new foods from different countries. I have traveled to 7 Middle East and North African countries for mission trips.
Q: What woman has made the most impact in your life?
A: The women in my BFG have impacted me in my time ninth and O. They pray and encourage me when I am walking in a difficult season of my life and always point me to Christ.
Q: What is something the Lord has taught you in the last year?
A: The Lord has taught me in the last year to trust Him in every situation I face. For example, I was in the process with organizations to go overseas for long-term missions. I planned to finish everything and leave at the beginning of this year, but God closed the door.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. You will find me, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.” Jeremiah 29:11-14.
This passage reminds me that God has a better plan for me. He will open those doors at the right time and with the right person.

On Mondays, we’ll take time to meet the women of NAOBC. Five questions followed by how you can connect with the NAOBC women on social media. Today’s interview is with Jeannie Riley.
Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I am 35 and have been a believer for about 20 years. I grew up in a secular home but was invited to church by a friend in middle school, and the Lord was gracious to me and opened my eyes and heart to His salvation. I work as a Student Advisor with Risepoint – a third-party company that helps schools with Enrollment and Retention services for online programs.
Q: How long have you been at NAOBC? BFG? Areas where you serve?
A: I’ve been at NAOBC for about 12 years – joining soon after returning to Louisville in 2013. I’m in the Single’s BFG and serve on the Tech Team (Worship Team). I also recently joined the Rope Holding Teams for the Pickwicks and the Gervacios.
Q: What is a fun fact that most people wouldn’t know about you?
A: I was a dog trainer for about 5 years.
Q: What woman has made the most impact in your life?
A: While many women have significantly impacted my life, the woman who has made the most impact was my youth minister, Becky. During my time in her youth group, Becky was integral to my coming to know Christ and growing my desire to follow Him. During a time when most of the important people in my life were unbelievers, she was an example of how to live differently. Even though my theology has changed a lot since then, I still look back and see how God used her influence to change the trajectory of my life.
Q: What is something the Lord has taught you in the last year?
A: In the last year, the Lord has taught me about the importance of community. It’s been a difficult season in many ways, including feeling isolated. He’s been kind in showing me my need for deeper friendships and helping me bravely take steps to cultivate them.

Q: What woman has made the most impact in your life?
A: I would say, my mom. She has dementia now, but she continues to serve at church and serve her family. I see her once a month, and she always tries to take care of me when I’m there to take care of her. To be a better Sunday school teacher, she took seminary classes (in Chinese) when she was in her 50s after my father had passed away. Her life is an example to me: to serve others to the best of my ability and never to stop learning.
Q: What is something the Lord has taught you in the last year?
A: His sovereign choice, I can rest in His plan for my life and my family’s life no matter what happens.

Not surprisingly, I am on the rope-holding team for Ukraine, although the Hugheses have relocated now, with the war going on. I served in VBS in 2023 and also visited shut-ins.
