Day 9 – Jesus’ Final Week – The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Christ
“After Pilate condemned Jesus and He was abused by the Roman soldiers, events unfolded quickly. When the four accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion are examined side by side, Matthew and Mark are the most similar, while Luke and John are quite unique. We must remember that there are four accounts describing the same event from different vantage points, each focusing on the aspects the author wanted to emphasize to their audience.” (119)
Scripture Passages:
Matthew 27:31-66
Mark 15:20-47
Luke 23:26-54
John 19:17-42
Read Chapter 9 in Jesus’ Final Week
“The first saying (Jesus said on the cross) ‘Father forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing’ (Luke 23:34). The words of Jesus’ prayer include passersby who shook their heads in disgust at Him; the Roman soldiers who taunted Him; the chief priests who stood near the cross mocking Him; Pilate, who convicted Him of treason; the religious leaders who condemned Him for blasphemy; and the criminals on either side of Him. …Jesus’ prayer was not to absolve them of all their sins but for the fact they did not understand they were killing the ‘Holy and Righteous One.'” (139)
