Being Godly in an Ungodly World

The world around us seems to be on a never-ending carousel ride to nowhere. We thought 2020 was nuts and now we’re in 2021 still dealing with the same issues we did a year ago.

The United States has its share of problems but all those seem tame compared to other countries. Our hearts are breaking as we pray for those in Afghanistan. And that’s just one country under attack. The list goes on.

The question becomes “I’m so weary. How do I live a godly life in an ungodly world?” In short, it isn’t for the faint of heart.

This week at NAOBC, as women, we begin our Fall Discipleship Groups reading through the book “Disciplines of a Godly Woman” by Barbara Hughes. The men will be reading its counterpart, “Disciplines of a Godly Man” by her husband, Kent Hughes.

No book has the magical answer to living a godly life, except for THE Book – the Bible. In I Timothy 4:7, Paul tells us to “Train yourself in godliness.” One way to do that is be a part of a Discipleship Group. What is the benefit of being a part of a small group? Can’t I do this on my own? Here are my ABCs of why discipleship groups are important…

A – Accountability

Being in a small group weekly keeps you accountable to your commitment to study. If I choose to go through a Bible study on my own, I may eventually do it, but since I’m doing it alone, the same motivation isn’t there to keep me focused. In a small group, I have deadlines and people who can spur me on when I find myself needing that encouragnent.

B – Bible Study

The only guidebook for life is the Bible. Going through focused studies on specific doctrine and disciplines helps take those principles and apply them to everyday life. In a group setting, you can share what God has taught you and learn from others.

C – Community

When you grow together in community, you benefit from deep relationships that sustain us during our everyday lives. We see that in our BFGs, but with gender-specific discipleship groups, women can connect on a deeper level with other women, often in different stages of life. Growing spiritually and relationally makes for a wonderful combination.

It’s not too late to register for our Discipleship Groups. Register here to get connected to a small group. It all kicks off on August 25 so you don’t want to miss it!
