God’s Plan for You

A favorite verse for many is Jeremiah 29:11. It reminds us that God is in charge and has a plan for us. Let’s take a moment to remember the backdrop of this wonderful verse in today’s devotionable.

Don’t Judge Me

Perhaps the most well-known verse in the Bible is Matthew 7:1. Jesus says, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.” What does Jesus mean by this statement? Jonah Chitty helps us break down this passage on today’s Devotionable.

Pray Big Prayers

Jesus makes an astonishing promise regarding prayer. There are usually two errors regarding this promise. One, we may be tempted to overly qualify what Jesus said, leading us to not ask him for much in prayer. Or conversely, we can pray selfishly and not receive what we ask for because we ask with wrong motives. Let’s take Jesus at his word and pray BIG prayers for his glory and the good of ourselves and others.

Our Week in the Word this week comes from Nick Braun, one of our College Group Leaders. It is an especially timely word for college students this week!

I am really looking forward to this weekend’s retreat. I have some really great memories as both
a leader and a student from these retreats. The teaching and fellowship always leave lasting
marks on our students. This was especially true the time Abby gave me a black eye on a
retreat the weekend before I started my Master’s degree… but that’s a story for another time.
As we head into this weekend I just want to pass along a couple of practical tips for the days
ahead.

1. Be Ready to Leave – Do not wait until the last minute to be ready to go. Do not rush around
Saturday morning looking for clothes or bedding. Have your stuff ready to go Friday night
so you can be rested and prepared. Coming into the retreat stressed and tired will rob you
(and your friends) of the fruitful time that you could spend together. During your quiet times
the next couple of days, pray for the retreat and those who are going. Pray for the teachers
and leaders. Pray for yourself that you would be open to hear what the Lord might want to
say to you.

2. Be Ready to Come Back – If you have something due on Monday, get it done before we
leave. If you have something due Tuesday, get it started before we leave. Do not leave
something hanging over your head all weekend. Again, you will rob yourself of a fruitful time
if you do not have the coming days planned for.

3. Be Ready to Grow – While the retreat is a great time for simply getting away from school
and work, it is also meant to be a time of growth. As a leadership team, we hope that you
learn something during our time together this weekend. Some of the learning that takes
place will hopefully be overtly spiritual in nature. We certainly hope your knowledge of God
grows in our short time together. But let’s also keep in mind the things we have talked
about at our College Nights as we spend the weekend together. This is a perfect time to
put into practice some of the practical things we have discussed through our book study.
Try to meet a new person. Try to serve someone while we are there. Try to find new ways to
love this small part of your church that will be together for these few hours.

Train Up A Child

Children are a gift and heritage from the Lord! How precious they are. Christians are called to raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. We think about Proverbs 22:6 when we consider parenting in fear of the Lord. What does this proverb mean? Ninth & O Family Pastor Ryan Morris talks about it today on Devotionables.

Do all Things Work for Good?

Romans 8:28 is an anchor of hope for the believer, and rightly so! This precious verse reminds us that God is in control and that he is good and does good. But, we must be careful not to remove this verse from its context or truncate it to the point that we misapply it to our lives. Adam Cole reminds us of what God is telling us through the pen of the Apostle Paul.

Our Week in the Word segment is back!!! You can expect mid-week encouragement every Wednesday as we hear from one of our leaders. This week, we hear from Philip Brown, our College and Singles Pastor.

Sun’s out…Gun’s Out

While I was in high school, the basketball players used to always roll our sleeves up when working out to show our biceps/guns. Most of us didn’t like tank tops so we either rolled our shirtsleeves up or cut the sleeves out completely. Yes…this is not a new thing college students.

Today was a great day to get the guns out. No… I didn’t cut off the sleeves of my I Love MY Church shirt. I was actually able to get out of the house and be what God has called me to be. A light in a dark world.   It was sweet!! It is crazy. People are more apt to talk if they aren’t going to freeze to death. So…just today…I was able to talk to about 10 unchurched individuals or non-believers. It started at Starbucks (of course) and ended with some neighborhood kids playing basketball in our front driveway. As we learned from I Peter this week in BFG, I was able to be a light in a dark world.

“God has chosen me to be a light. That is not just prescriptive but descriptive.”

I was so encouraged today to get the guns out again spiritually. The weather the rest of this week looks very promising.  Let’s use it to let our lights shine.

I Can Do All Things Through Christ

Misinterpretations come in many forms. Are we aware of Scriptural misinterpretations? In this Devotionable, Brandon discusses Philippians 4:13 as a commonly misinterpreted Scripture – do Christians have the power to do anything? Our power rests in the strength that God provides to achieve His will for His glory.
