BIG NEWS/CHANGES FOR THE COLLEGE GROUP!!

OUR FIRST COLLEGE NIGHT WILL BE AUGUST 22nd!! WOOOHOOOOOOO!!! Can’t wait to see you all there!!!

Big News NAOBC College Group!! This fall we will be introducing College Night, Sundays from 6-8 pm. This will be taking the place of our weekly college small groups, so, instead of joining a small group this fall, we will just have one night all together for college night.

There will be supper (What??) every week, as well as games, fellowship, and a short lesson with smaller prayer groups to follow. This event is very fellowship-oriented and will offer a great opportunity for our college group to become closer and more connected as a whole. This night will also serve as a great opportunity to invite friends who are both believers and unbelievers!

The heart behind college night comes from wanting to promote unity within our college group and our college group within the church as a whole. This fall semester our church will be going through “Disciplines of a Godly Woman” and “Disciplines of a Godly Man” on Wednesday nights, and by eliminating college small groups during the week, this frees our college-aged students to one church event during the week, hopefully limiting busy nights in the midst of homework and work.

Our main desire this fall is to see an uprise in college students serving and investing in our church body as a whole, and our college group as a whole. It is our prayer that our college students will get to better know the rest of the church by coming to Wednesday night studies with different aged members or serving in a ministry. So, two nights this fall. Sunday nights are for our college night, and Wednesday night for the church as a whole! We can’t wait to see you all in the fall and are so excited for College Night!

Wednesday Night Discipleship:

Begins on August 25, at 6:30 pm.

Adults will have the opportunity to serve with the Choir, attend Open Bible Study with TJ Betts studying the Psalms, or meet in Discipleship Groups.

Men’s groups will be using the book Disciplines of a Godly Man by R Kent Hughes, and women’s groups will use Disciplines of Godly Women by Barbara Hughes as a springboard to invest in one another’s lives.

Our Week in the Word segment this week comes from Peter Holmes, one of our College Group leaders. The Holmes family also often opens their home to our College Group whether it be for a Bible study, meal, or just a super fun hangout event!

In 1990, Aaron Tippin recorded the hit song, “You’ve Got to Stand for Something.” In the chorus, the song says that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. This chorus has been running through my mind a lot lately. Although this song is not biblical by any means, it does have a biblical principle.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see time and time again where the Israelites waver on what they believe and what they stand for — worship the one true God, keep the Sabbath holy, have one wife, not to marry foreign wives, etc.

We all know people that have wavered in their beliefs. People we love and care for have strayed from what they know is right, true, and holy.

We, as believers, have a foundation. Our foundation comes from Scripture. 1 Peter 1:24-25 says, “For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” Scripture never changes. It never is wrong. Culture and ideals will change. The world will change. As believers, we will continue to run against what the world says is right.

If we begin to waver on what Scripture says is right and true, we will fall, we will waver, we will fail. The world will say that everyone goes to heaven. Scripture says that only those who believe in the Son of God will be saved.

We cannot waiver from the truths of Scripture, from the truths of God. If we don’t stand on the foundation of Scripture, we will fall for any worldly ideal that blows about like chaff in the wind. Stand firm and hold fast to the truth.

When We Forget About Love

It is easy to forget God’s love for us. Enriched with Scripture references, Stuart Townend gives us this glorious song to remind us that God loves us. Let this rich hymn remind you of the depth of God’s love.

No Other Name

“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” is a beautiful hymn expressing the power found in the name of our Savior, Jesus. There is only salvation found in Jesus. Praise HIS name today!

Behold Our God

God’s providence resides at the intersection where his sovereignty, wisdom, and love meet, and he acts on our behalf. Behold Our God takes us on a journey of thinking about these attributes of our God and leads us to express worship of our great and good God.

Our Week in the Word segment this week comes from Timothy Babatunde, one of our College Group interns.

God’s Commitment to His People

“And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”

Gen. 17:7-8; See also, Deut. 7:6-8; 1 Peter 2:9-10.

After God’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious promise to make Abraham a great man, and the father of a great nation through whom God will bless the rest of the earth (c.f. Gen. 12:1-3), in Gen. 17:7-8 we see that God put an icing on that delicious cake. By virtue of Gen. 17:7-8’s promise, God is obligated “TO BE GOD,” to his people, because He promised to be that.

Let’s put this into perspective, the God, the ‘I AM WHO I AM,’ whom there is no other being in all the heavens and all the earth by whom to swear apart from himself (c.f. Heb. 6:13), this eternal God made an oath to Abraham, that “I will…be God to you and to your offspring after you.” God, in all his capacity as the God of the universe, promised to be who He is, in all his excellence, to his people. What a jaw-dropping truth to believe in and delight in, that God is committed to being God to his chosen people.

More so, in Moses’ address in Deut. 7:6-8, after God miraculously rescued his people from slavery in Egypt, Moses reminded the Israelites of their identity. That they are a chosen people of God to whom God has pledged his commitment to be, their God. They are a people consecrated and set apart to be holy as the Lord their God is holy. They are a treasured possession of the eternal personal God who chose them. But, for the Lord of all lords, and the King of all kings to have chosen these people, or any people for that matter, to be their personal God; well, these people must have been a very special and elite group of people, right? Umm, Na Na! Moses was clear that God chose them not on their merit, but solely because God loves them. God is committed to being God to his chosen people because He loves them. How wonderful!

Now, upon the establishment of God’s people as the church of God, brother Peter reaffirmed this same truth, in 1 Peter 2:9-10, to encourage believers who are suffering intense affliction and who are not without the tendency of doubting God’s commitment to them. Peter reminded them that they are of the same people of God whom God has chosen for himself. They are part of the same people whom God has called out of their darkness into his marvelous light. They are the same people to whom God sent his one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to lay down his life for them, as the climax of God’s love for his people in the history of fallen man’s redemption.

Brothers and sisters, do you believe this truth? Therefore, let this truth comfort you and let us, as God’s people, proclaim His excellencies through our lives, words, thoughts, and actions to the watching world today. God is committed to being God to his people, and He desires that his people delight in Him for his excellent commitment to them. Therefore, I ask, because God’s commitment to his people is unfailing, would we not unfeignedly commit ourselves to this excellent glorious God?

Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him

Have you ever been caught unprepared at a party for forgetting to bring a gift? It can be embarrassing for you and maybe even offensive to others. When we neglect to praise the Lord, it is awful. All of creation praises him. How much more should his people praise him?
